Symantec New Zealand, a company synonymous with internet security, has launched new versions of Norton's SystemWorks, CleanSweep and Utilities, products designed to complement the functionality of Windows XP.

The Norton Internet Security consists of Norton AntiVirus 2001 and Norton Personal Firewall 2001. The firewall component controls Internet connections to and from the PC, in addition, there is also privacy control and ad blocking components. Customizable parental control is also included.

Information security company Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC) has announced that computer manufacturer Toshiba will use its Norton AntiVirus 2004 software to protect all Toshiba notebooks sold in Canada.

Symantec admitted that all versions of Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) contain a security vulnerability that could allow a malicious user to remotely take control of the computer. This kind of announcement is common to Windows users but this flaw also affects NAV running on Apple's OS X platform.

Just thought you'd like to know that at least on my Mac installing the StuffIt Expander 10.0.2 mentioned on Thursday broke both Norton Anti-Virus and iChat connecting to an SSL Jabber server. Installing using the StuffIt Expander link from Allume's web site restored both.

Several months ago it was discovered that it caused conflicts with third-party add-ins, such as WinFax and Adobe PDFMaker, in both Word and Excel. The Plug-in would cause the applications to crash upon starting or exiting depending on the add-in.

Norton AntiVirus 2007 improved some over last year, but McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007, despite adding a firewall, failed to move up. New this year is Eset NOD32, an excellent application, but one that's best suited for more advanced users. Look for additional reviews for CA Anti-virus 2007 and BitDefender 10 within the next few weeks.

Norton AntiVirus 2002 is expected to ship at the beginning of September, priced at USD49.95. Current users of Norton AntiVirus will be able to upgrade to the new version for USD29.95, which includes a USD20 mail-in rebate.
